I am devouring a Carl's Jr. Famous Star. We skipped dinner because of the timing of the movie Coraline. We had a date tonight to celebrate six years of marriage. We had the sitter and a plan for a late night dinner. Our timing was off so we skipped the dinner part and picked up to go. This would be alright except that we'd really like Henry Selick to return the two-and-a-half hours of our lives we spent at his movie. He owes me an anniversary celebration.
We are into indy films. We have enjoyed similar movies like Tim Burton's movies before; but this made "Corpse Bride" look like "Enchanted." We appreciate artistic achievement and cut films some slack when they take risks. I have to tell you, halfway through the movie I wanted it to just end so I could go out to dinner and make the images go away. It was dark, but not well-done dark.
Some of the Tim Burton magic is that he allows stop-motion to be stop-motion. There is charm. This was more like someone who has SERIOUS mother issues and can't work through them. The best character was the cat played by Keith David
It is DEFINITELY not for children under 12. We had some teen girls next to us that were quite upset by a lot of the scenes and were hiding their eyes. It was teen drama, they were really bugged.
It's not for children under 12, but we don't have a clue who the audience actually is. Any ideas? It wasn't us. It did create an unforgettable anniversary night. At least dinner was something we could count on and we got the babysitter home on schedule. I'll need to stay up for a while reading something positive and uplifting - perhaps a chapter from Lewis Carroll's bio. Lewis Carroll and Henry Selick could have been best buds, I think. Something mindless, make it get out of my head, please.
