Santa came through for everyone. Mom and dad did pretty well, too. We were awakened at 7:30 - predetermined time the night before - to, "The lizards got crickets! The lizards got crickets!" Our children put out stockings for their pet anoles and fish. They figured their dog wasn't a kid anymore, so he didn't need one. The also figured the bird is on the naughty list because he squawks so much.
By 7:50, the presents were all opened. It was a mixed bag of games, stuffed toys, clothing and books. The fish received sea glass to dress up their tank. The crickets were live and in a silk draw-string bag. I helped Austin dump them into their tank. Phil and Bill seemed happy about the whole experience.
As much as the toys, clothing, candy were appreciated, another "toy" kept them busy for over two hours today. We all know about the coveted CARDBOARD BOX in kiddome. This topped it! While a bit distracted in our bedroom, I noticed a broken digital camera. This was rendered useless by the "peltations" of sand at Nehalem Bay, Oregon. The Oregon Coast has claimed the lives of a couple of our cameras, cellphones and other sand-phobic electronics. The camera, much like cars on blocks, won't get better. Seemed like a waste of a good experience.
I brought it out of the bedroom and carried it to the table. I also brought out the case of jewelry screw drivers and invited Austin to take it apart. His eyes grew as wide as his grin. It was like a golden chalice set in jewels before him.
His sister joined him after about 45 minutes and they had to take turns. She was busy documenting her findings and prying things open. I even kept a few pieces for future jewelry projects.
They are back to the toys, but pause every half hour or so to mention how cool it was to take apart the broken camera.
