Switching web hosting companies can be scary

I know I can become complacent when things are working just fine, even if economically it doesn't make sense.  Such was the case with my own family of professional websites - not including this blog.  I did the math, after five years with the same hosting company for mail and web and EEK!  What a dope. I woulndn't let my clients do this, why would I want to waste enough money in a year for a romantic getaway with my husband?

Switching was a scary, but necessary task. My website and email are my entire business. If they don’t work or go down, I’m missing correspondence, potential business and look like an idiot. 

Deep breath. Zen position. Turn on iTunes and let’s do this! 

Here are the steps I went through the other night to switch to a new hosting provider including email:

I'm a proud member of an organization, Portland Mamas, Inc.  It's an organization for women/mothers in the area who work from home.  95% of us have home offices AND children.

Getting out of my own way and out of my head

I find when I'm in the spiraling funk and can't seem to see daylight it's time to get out of myself and help someone else who can't help themselves.  I break out a bag of scraps and make a binky.

Presumed self-importance causes late night panic.

I know better than to work into the evenings. My children want attention, I want to visit with the family but that nasty HTML was beckoning.  I felt I could make one site better, more efficient, cleaner, W3c validated!  I should have waited until morning.

Yoga Alternative - Ice Skating

I've been in search of a way to clear my head.  My brothers, my friends and clients suggested yoga; all but one client.  She had a better idea.  Ice skating!

I hit the "send" button too fast.

Just as it is impossible to truly retract something after you hit the "send" button, it is true in this application as well.

Accepting I can't do it all

I always appreciate when someone is blunt with me and just says, "I don't know how" or "I don't know."    As we strive to build our businesses I need to remember to extend the same courtesy as it applies.

August was a month of jumping ship.

August was a very busy month with new clients, getting reacquainted with old clients and many new and interesting projects.  The biggest trend I experienced were clients who were jumping ship from former web support and hosting teams.
